The dog bite attorneys in Galloway, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group invite you to learn more about the great history of the township along with all it has to offer its residents.

Galloway

The township of Galloway is situated in the northeastern section of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. As the largest municipality in New Jersey, it takes up 73,273.6 acres. Within this space is 56,748.8 acres of land and 16,524.8 acres of water, which includes Otter Pond, Mullica River, Matrix Run, and Reeds Bay. The neighboring communities include Absecon, Brigantine, Port Republic, Egg Harbor City, and Pleasantville.

History

A royal patent that came from King George III in 1774 created the township. During that time, the region was part of Gloucester County and included the following communities:

  • Hammonton
  • Mullica Township
  • Egg Harbor City
  • Port Republic
  • Brigantine
  • Atlantic City
  • Absecon

The area was incorporated into a township by the New Jersey Legislature in 1798, helping to make up the state's first group of 104 townships under the Township Act of 1798.

Different cultures of indigenous peoples inhabited the region, including the Lenape Native Americans who occupied it during the first European encounter. They were one of the many East Coast Algonquian language peoples.

The European settlers were mainly English in the first years of colonial settlement. One theory of how the township received its name is that it was after an area in southern Scotland. The second idea was that it was named for Joseph Galloway, a Loyalist delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774. Joseph was opposed to the independence of the first thirteen colonies. The area was the site of the Battle of Chestnut Neck during the American Revolutionary War.

Historical Landmarks

In the unincorporated community within the township is Historic Smithville. The area was home to a one-room stagecoach stop but has become an attraction for residents and visitors to spend a day. The cobblestone walkways and footbridges make the details that guests love. Some of the shops along the strip include:
