Moorestown-Lenola

The unincorporated community is found within the Township of Moorestown in northern Burlington County, New Jersey. The community covers 4,555.52 acres, of which 69.12 acres is water, including Strawbridge Lake, Pennsauken Creek, and Pompeston Creek. The nearest towns are Maple Shade, Hartford, Cinnaminson, and Ramblewood. 

History

Thomas and Elizabeth Moore settled into the area in 1722. Moore bought 33 acres along on the north side in 1732. He quickly established a hotel on the northwest corner. Due to his property ownership, the name Moorestown replaced Chester, and eventually, it formerly split off from Chester.

Historic District

The neighborhood is home to a 47-acre historic district. The area was officially recognized as a historic place on August 30, 1990. This was due to its significance in the following:

  • architecture
  • commerce
  • community development
  • exploration and settlement from 1720 until 1940

As many as 351 contributing buildings and four contributing sites comprise the registered district. Some of these include:

  • Breidenhart - This castle-like house was constructed by Samuel Leeds Allen in 1894 and sits on a 10-acre estate. It now serves as the Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey. 
  • Moorestown Friends School and Meetinghouse - This historic Quaker school still hosts worship for local Quakers every Sunday. Additionally, the building, which was built in 1802, is a venue for many events, such as the annual Christmas Eve meeting. 
  • Smith Mansion - Known to some as the Smith-Cadbury Mansion, this house was built in 1738 and is the current headquarters of the Historical Society of Moorestown. Tours of the mansion are available on certain days of the week. 

Education

Students in the area are provided education through public schools that are part of Moorestown Township Public Schools. The district includes a total of six schools, with the following being zoned for the community:

  • George C. Baker Elementary School - 378 students - located on West Maple Avenue
  • William Allen Middle School - 638 Students - located on North Stanwick Road 
  • Moorestown High School - 1,293 Students - located on Bridgeboro Road

Additional educational options for residents include:

  • Burlington County Institute of Technology - enrolls both high school and post-secondary level students
  • Moorestown Friends School - a private Quaker school serving preschool through twelfth grades
  • Our Lady of Good Counsel School -  a Catholic school offering education for infants to eighth grade
  • Resurrection Regional Catholic Schools - another private Catholic school in Cherry Hill

Demographics

The CDP had 14,217 people that formed 5,310 households and 3,882 families in 2010. This was an increase of 2.6% from the previous count of 13,860 in 2000. The racial demographics of the neighborhood were as follows:

  • 84.93% (12,074) White
  • 8.29% (1,178) Black or African American
  • 0.11% (16) Native American
  • 3.14% (447) Asian
  • 0.04% (5) Pacific Islander
  • 1.03% (147) from other races
  • 2.46% (350) from two or more races
