Allenwood

The unincorporated community Allenwood is located within the Wall Township in the southern region of Monmouth County, New Jersey. This small community only spans 1182.08 acres and consists of 73.6 acres of water, located within the Manasquan River State Wildlife Management Area. Much of the town is on the Brick Township Reservoir, and the Manasquan River forms part of its southern border. The John F. Kennedy International Airport is only an hour and a half drive.

History

The area was initially home to the Native American Indians of the Lenape Tribe. Many archeological relics have been found near the Manasquan River and suggests that it was the meeting location for larger groups of the tribe. In 1668 the area became the home to the farmer, Anaiah Gifford. The area became mainly farmland until the early 1900s.

Historical Landmark

Located at 3208 Allenwood Lakewood Road sits the Allenwood General Store. The original store was built in the 1850s and ran by postmaster Thomas Allen. However, it was located further up the road. John and June Herbert carried on the name with a new building in its current location in 1925. After they retired, Jeffery Herbert, their youngest son, bought the store. Since 2006, Jeffery and Heather, his wife, have strived to preserve the historic charm of the General Store.

This suburban neighborhood consists of newer constructed houses that average $699,151, putting it within the top 10% most expensive in the country. The average household income was $117,071 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the employed adults in the area is the following:
