The historic neighborhood of Fairview is situated in the southern region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. Newton Creek forms three sides of the community's borders. The neighborhood, initially known as Yorkship Village, was founded in 1918 during World War I. It was intended as a planned community for shipyard workers and their families to live as they commuted to New York to work in the shipyards.
The war brought a boom in shipbuilding which caused an influx of workers in dire need of housing. The development began with 1,000 homes in 1921 and cost an estimated $11 million to develop. When the war was over, the Emergency Fleet Corporation started selling all 1,579 houses and 59 apartments, and by 1924, all but 12 of the houses were sold.
The village was renamed in 1922, but the original elementary school still operates as Yorkship Elementary School. Most of the original streets were named for famous naval vessels during the time.
