The main roadways that run through the community are the Garden State Parkway, NJ Route 17, and NJ Route 4.

History

The area that makes up the present-day Arcola was once farmland owned by Fritz Behnke. Behnke was born in Paramus in 1919, but his family moved to the area in 1886. Along with his two brothers, Donald and Walter, he owned the Behnke's Paramus Building Supply located in Arcola at Century Road and NJ Route 17. The Behnke family allowed fellow farm and land-owning Zabriskie family to grow crops in the area. The Zabriskie's, formerly Saborowski, were immigrants from Poland or the Russian area. They owned estates in several locations within the state, including the following:

  • River Edge - Ackerman-Zabriskie-Steuben House
  • Paramus - Albert J. Zabriskie Farmhouse
  • Paramus - Zabriskie Tenant House
  • Haworth - Garret Zabriskie House

They were known to build homes and give land to previous slaves within a section of Paramus that would become a haven for free African Americans. On the land in the Arcola area, they grew the following crops and raised livestock:

  • corn
  • melons
  • potatoes

The Arcola Country Club

A good portion of the neighborhood is taken over by the Arcola Country Club and Golf Course. In 1909, plans for the development of a golf course began. The Easton property owned by Edward D. Easton was sold to Arcola for the project but would prove to be too small and full of trees for the development. Later this would be the home of the historical Easton Tower.  Zabriskie would sell a good portion of the land to Arcola that would be developed into the golf course. The golf course was designed by Herbert H. Barker, a Golf Architect and professional golfer at the Garden City Golf Club. The course was redesigned two more times:

  • 1930 - Willard G. Wilkinson from Wimbleton
  • in the late 1950s - Robert Trent Jones Senior from Greater Manchester
  • recently - Steve Smyers from Florida
