The personal injury attorneys in Atlantic City, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, present the following article about the area and its history.

Atlantic City

The coastal city is located in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The town takes up 17.21 square miles, of which 6.45 square miles is water. Aside from the main coast being on the Atlantic Ocean, some other waterfront areas connect to Lakes Bay, Absecon Bay, Great Thorofare, and Mankiller Bay, to name a few. Atlantic City is a two-hour drive from New York City, New York, and an hour drive to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

History

The area first became home to hotels in 1853 with the construction of the Belloe House. The town was incorporated a year later, and construction was started on the Camden and Atlantic Railroad. This allowed direct access to Philadelphia. The first boardwalk was constructed in 1870 in an attempt to keep sand outside of the hotels. By 1878 more hotels had sprung up, and the railway brought tourists into the city.

By the 1960s, the area was home to many luxury hotels and resorts. Unfortunately, they would suffer a decline in tourism, and the few hotels that have lasted included:

  • The Claridge
  • the Dennis
  • the Ritz-Carlton
  • the Haddon Hall
  • the Madison

The state legalized gambling in 1976 in an attempt to revitalize the area. The Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel was the first legal casino in the eastern United States. Today there are eleven casinos actively providing entertainment and driving the tourism economy:

  • 1978 - Resorts
  • 1979 - Bally's
  • 1979 - Atlantic City Caesars
  • 1980 - Harrah's
  • 1981 - Tropicana
