Avondale

Avondale is located in the township of Nutley in Essex County. It is a 38-minute drive to Manhattan, NY, and less than a 20-minute drive to Newark, NJ. The Third River makes up the western border of the community. 

History

Avondale has a history of artists living in the area. The Nutley Historical Society even created a historical walk through the area known as the Enclosure, where many of these artists lived. 

The Vreeland Homestead was built in 1702 and belonged to the VanGieson family. Bastian Van Giesen was a Dutch artist and one of the area's first settlers. British sympathizers used the house during the Revolutionary War, and for this reason, it was seized by Captain Abram Speer of the British Army. Speer then sold the homestead to John M. Vreeland in 1783. The Vreeland house is located on Chestnut Street just over the Third River. It currently serves as the Woman's Club and has since 1912.
