The borough of Berlin is located in the central region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. The community covers 2,310.4 acres, of which 0.39% is water, including Great Egg Harbor River and Tinkers Branch. The neighboring communities are Pine Valley, Tansboro, West Berlin, Clementon, and Lindenwold.
Historically the area was known as Longacoming, based on the Native Americans Lonaconing Trail. The trail was a route that connected the shore to the Delaware River. Stagecoaches would stop in the area as it was halfway between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. The town was officially incorporated as a borough in 1927, but the origin of the name is unknown. Up until 1848, the town was the county seat of Camden County. The city of Camden took over in 1848.
The Berlin Historic District is contained to Washington Avenue, East Taunton Avenue, and Haines Avenue. The area was added to the National Register in 1995. Many houses date back to the 1800s, including the Westcott House. There are also two historic taverns and a hotel.
The town has many historic homes and structures that add to the charm of the community. The Long-a-Coming Depot is one of the oldest surviving railroad stations in the state and was built in 1853. Restoration of the station took place in 1994, led by the Long-a-Coming Historical Society. It now is a meeting place for the historical society as well as other organizations.
