The township is situated in the northwestern region of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 26,611.2 acres, of which 320 acres are bodies of water, such as Pancoast Mill Pond, Cedar Lake, and Lake George. The main roadways that travel through the neighborhood include Weymouth Road, Harding Highway, Jackson Road, Buena-Hammonton Road, and Tuckahoe Road. Initially, the area was part of Cape May County but in 1694 joined Gloucester County. Atlantic County was established in 1813. The township was incorporated into a township on March 5, 1867, taking land from Hamilton Township and became part of Atlantic County. The name was taken from the Mexican-American Battle of Buena Vista that took place in 1847.
John Campbell founded a sawmill along Deep Run, part of the Great Egg Harbor River system. Campbell also opened the Ye Olde Midway Inn, a tavern, in 1779. Early settlers came into the area for its rich soil and built many farms. Businesses like Comar and Wilmad Glass were successful at fueling its economy.
The community has many things to offer both its residents and guest. The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey has its permanent location just off of Jackson Road.
