Buena Vista Township

The township is situated in the northwestern region of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 26,611.2 acres, of which 320 acres are bodies of water, such as Pancoast Mill Pond, Cedar Lake, and Lake George. The main roadways that travel through the neighborhood include Weymouth Road, Harding Highway, Jackson Road, Buena-Hammonton Road, and Tuckahoe Road. The neighboring communities are Vineland, Newfield, Hamilton, Elwood, and Folsom. 

History

Initially, the area was part of Cape May County but in 1694 joined Gloucester County. Atlantic County was established in 1813. The township was incorporated into a township on March 5, 1867, taking land from Hamilton Township and became part of Atlantic County. The name was taken from the Mexican-American Battle of Buena Vista that took place in 1847.

John Campbell founded a sawmill along Deep Run, part of the Great Egg Harbor River system. Campbell also opened the Ye Olde Midway Inn, a tavern, in 1779. Early settlers came into the area for its rich soil and built many farms. Businesses like Comar and Wilmad Glass were successful at fueling its economy. 

Neighborhood

The community has many things to offer both its residents and guest. The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey has its permanent location just off of Jackson Road. The museum began with Ralph E. Hunter, Sr., showcasing some of his historical treasures out of his own apartment. As his collection grew, the township offered him a space to better display it to the public. Today his collection includes:

  • images of stereotypes of the African Americans through the generations
  • resorted original portraits donated by a family
  • furniture and fixtures

Places of Worship

The township has many churches to appeal to the religiously diverse community. Some of these include:

  • Bethel Holy Temple COGIC
  • First Union Baptist Church
  • Friendship Church

Demographics

The township had a population of 7,570 in 2010, which helped make up the 2,786 households and 2,020 families within its borders. This was an increase of 1.8% from 2000. The racial makeup of the residents was the following:

  • 78.18% white 
  • 13.45% African American
  • 11.48% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.46% Native American
  • 1.06% Asian
  • 0.04% Pacific Islander
  • 4.12% other races
  • 2.69% two or more races

The median income per household within the township was $43,770 in 2000. A family income averaged $50,403. The median income for men was approximately $36,064, while women averaged $26,180 per year. Some of the commonly held professions included: 

  • 18.83% office and administrative support roles
  • 9.84% sales and service jobs
  • 8.85% management positions
