Cherry Hill

Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is located in Camden County. The township is less than ten miles from Philadelphia, and a short drive of 28 minutes will land you at the Philadelphia International Airport.

History

The first inhabitants of the area were the Lenni-Lenape Nation of Native Americans. William Penn, a Quaker from England, was one of the first European settlers in the 17th Century. Where the Colestown Cemetery now sets was the beginning site of residential development. In the 19th Century, Cherry Hill was a farm belonging to Abraham Browning. After World War II, the area's population almost doubled, going from 5,811 in 1940 to 10,358 in 1950. Development continued, and in 1961 the name was officially adopted by the residents under a non-binding referendum.   The town residents continued to brand several establishments using the name; some of these include:

  • Cherry Hill Mall
  • Cherry Hill Estates
  • Cherry Hill Inn
  • Cherry Hill Towers

In 1972, several residents began planting Cherry Blossoms between Kings Highway and Haddonfield Road on Chapel Avenue for two miles. A traditional celebration takes place the last two weeks in April and the residents, along with the Cherry Hill Fire Department, continue to plant them to this day.

Education is important to the residents as 54.83% have a college degree. The average household income in Cherry Hill was $87,392 in 2010. The town consists of 88.96% of the population working in white-collar occupations. The occupational breakdown of the area's residents is as follows:
