The History of Clara Barton, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Clara Barton, NJ at Garden State Justice Group have put together the following snippet into the history of the community.

Clara Barton

Clara Barton is an unincorporated community situated in the central region of Edison Township, which is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Robinvale is to the west of the neighborhood, and Valentine is to the east across the New Jersey Turnpike. Menlo Park is the north of the town, and Keasbey is the southeast. Woodbridge and Grandview Avenues travel east and west across the town while U.S. Route 1 cuts along the eastern region.

History

The town takes its name from the founder of the American Red Cross, Clarissa Harlowe Barton. Barton was a self-taught nurse during the Civil War but was also a teacher and patent clerk. She opened the first free school in the state of New Jersey in Bordentown, located 40 miles south of our topic community.

Neighborhood

Within the town located on Amboy Avenue is the Heritage of Clara Barton, an assisted and independent living community. The area includes 84 assisted living apartments and 27 independent living apartments.

At the north end of the neighborhood is Roosevelt Park. The 196-acre park is the oldest in the county and was established in 1917. An eight-acre lake is in the northern section of the park and is great for fishing. The park is home to two structures that deserve a visit. One is the Veterans Memorial that won the 39th Annual Jersey Concrete Award. The second dates back to 1936 and was designed by sculptor Waylande "Kid" Gregory. The fountain sculpture is titled "Light Dispelling Darkness" and was constructed using terra cotta created locally in Sayreville. The 40-foot circular design depicts Gregory's concept of people combating evil through both knowledge and science. In 2005, the structure was restored due to massive erosion of the soft terra cotta.

Demographics

Out of the residents in the community, 28.5% were born in countries other than the United States. English is the first language of 62.2%, and 9.8% speak the language of India. Other languages heard in the neighborhood include Spanish and Tagalog, the first language of the Philippines.
