Cliffside Park

The borough of Cliffside Park is located in the southeastern section of Bergen County, New Jersey. The neighboring communities include Racetrack Section, Fairview, Ridgefield, and Edgewater. Within the borough are the unincorporated communities of Grantwood and Shadyside. The main roadways within the 614.4-acre borough are Palisades Avenue, Gorge Road, Anderson Avenue, and Edgewater Road.

History

The borough was formed using land from the Ridgefield Township and was officially incorporated in 1895. It was named due to its reference as the Park by the Cliffs. Its current motto is "On Top of the Palisades."

From 1898 until 1971, the area was home to the most visited amusement park in the country during the time. The Palisades Amusement Park was a 38-acre amusement park that offered the community a place for fun for all ages. The attraction overlooked the Hudson River and took advantage of the trolley to transport its guest into the area. The park included the following attractions:

  • diving horses
  • a baby parade
  • a wave pool - the largest saltwater pool in the nation
  • Cyclone roller coaster
  • rock and roll shows

The park was found to be discriminating on the color of the guest's skin it would admit into the pool. These instances continued from 1946 until the late 1950s, when the policy was eliminated.

One of the owners, Irving Rosenthal, was aware of a hole in the fence that allowed the local children to sneak into the park. Rather than fix the hole, he instructed the workers to allow the children in to enjoy the amenities of the park. Each ride was an individual cost, even past the admission fee. Despite not having any of his own, Rosenthal, who loved children, figured they could spend what little they had inside.

Neighborhood

The area has a large population of Turkish, Armenian, and Greek communities. The heritage can be seen throughout the community in places such as the Greek Catholic church, St Demetrius Melkite Catholic. Other cultural influences can be seen in the businesses that line Anderson Avenue, such as:

  • Hakki Baba Turkish Mediterranean Restaurant
  • Saray Cuisine
  • Nefista /Çiğ Köfte(Vegan Kofteh)
  • Istanbul Borek & Kebab
