The Township of Denville is situated in the central region of Morris County in the state of New Jersey. The township covers 8,153.6 acres and includes 5.86% of water, such as Lake Estling, Indian Lake, Holstein Lake, Cedar Lake, Rock Ridge Lake, and Rockaway River. The nearby communities are Rockaway, Victory Gardens, Mountain Way, Boonton Township, and Mountain Lakes.
The region was home to several campsites of the Lenape Native Americans. They traveled along the Minisink Trail that cut across the township. Route 10 and Mount Pleasant Turnpike follow the early path.
During the early 17th century, the English and Dutch began settlements in the area. William Penn began the land surveys in 1715. Several forges and mills were erected along the river from 1730 to 1760. The main industry was the Job Allen Iron Works. The residential and lakefront community began to take shape with help from the Hussa family and A.B Crane & Co.
Located just off Cooper Road lies the oldest continually operating farm in the county, The Ayre Knuth Farm. The farm began around 1793 by Daniel Ayres, a descendant of Irish immigrants. His grandfather, General Joseph Jackson, was the founder of Rockaway. The farmland was gifted to Ayres by his father-in-law, a prominent landowner David Garrigus. The first primary crops were grasses, grains with cattle and sheep being the main livestock.
Today the farm covers 51.8 acres, of which one-third is used for recreational fields, such as seasonal soccer. Only one-third of the property is still cultivated as the remaining is used as a site for historical structures such as:
The grounds are available for tours. During the Christmas season, fresh-cut Christmas trees are available for purchase.
