History

The community has a rich Italian history that goes back to the early 20th century. Italian immigrants flooded the area and began to build the duck houses along the bay, hence the town's name. They were known to raise waterfowl and poultry. However, the community's population began to decline following the end of World War II. The townspeople headed for automobile suburbs.

The town still clings to the Italian heritage, and many Italian flags can be seen on the buildings. It has been said that Nicodemo Scarfo and Salvatore Merlino, well-known mobsters, once lived in the area. Formica Bros. Bakery and Cafe was established in 1919 by Italian immigrants Francesco and Rosa Formica. The bakery is still a staple for the community as it continues to provide the same Italian recipes used over 100 years ago.

Another historic Italian bakery that opened in 1909 is A. Rando Bakery, located on Mississippi Avenue. Anthony & Candalora Rando opened the bakery. It is still a family-owned bakery, as their two sons run it now.
