Glassboro

The 5,990.4-acre borough is situated in the central region of Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. Some of the neighboring communities include Pitman, Hardingville, Clayton, and Williamstown. High Street and Delsea Drive intersect in the center of the community. The Glassboro Wildlife Management Area is located in the southeastern section of the town.

History

In 1805 a sea captain named Ebenezer Whitney arrived in the area. He had suffered an injury when his wine cargo wrecked off Cape May on his way to Philadelphia. The daughter of Thomas Heston nursed him back to health at the Heston Tavern. Whitney ended up marrying her a year later and remained in the community. He became a tavernkeeper and died in 1823. Three of his five sons worked in local glassworks, but it was Thomas, the elder son, who purchased the Harmony Glassworks in 1838 at the age of 24.

Thomas renamed the factory Whitney Brothers Glassworks. For 80 years, production boomed, allowing the company to become one of the nation's most best-equipped glass factories. During their height, they employed over 1000 workers and owned hundreds of houses for the workers. They also owned several thousands of acres of timber. By 1885 they filled 7.5 million warner's safe cure bottles. Many of the items produced at Whitney are sought out by collectors across the world, including flasks of the following shapes:

  • cabins
  • ears of corn
  • fish
  • Indian queens
  • pineapples
