Glen Ridge

The borough of Glen Ridge is situated in the northeastern region of Essex County in New Jersey. The town takes up 819.2 acres, of which 0.39% or 6.4 acres is water, such as Toney's Brook that flows through the central region. Montclair is to the west, and Bloomfield is to the east of the community. Brookdale is to the north, while East Orange is to the south. The main roadways include Ridgewood and Bay Avenues. 

History

As many as 66 families purchased the area from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans in 1666.  The acquisition was under the leadership of Robert Treat, an American colonial leader and founder of Newark. They named the area New Ark in reference to the religious freedom they were searching for. New Ark included other areas such as the following:

  • Bloomfield
  • Montclair
  • Belleville
  • Nutley

The community initially was a collection of farms and woodlands but did include an industrial area on the banks of Toney's Brook. These industries included the production of the following:

  • lumber
  • calico
  • pasteboard boxes
  • brass fittings
  • copper 
  • sandstone 

In 1895, the community voted to secede from the town. After its official incorporation on February 13, 1895, the first mayor of the community was Robert Rudd. 

Neighborhood

Within the community are several parks and athletic fields, such as the following:

  • Carteret Park
  • Hurrell Field
  • Sherman Field

The Glen Ridge Country Club is the oldest in the state and was founded in 1894. The Mountainside Hospital, home to the Richard Harries Pavillion, was founded in 1891. 

Education

The community's children attend the Glen Ridge Public Schools. In the 2018 2019 school year, they had an enrollment of 1,899 students within the four schools:

  • Forest Avenue School
  • Linden Avenue School
  • Ridgewood Avenue School
  • Glen Ridge High School

In 2012 the high school was ranked 12th out of the state, following coming in 4th in 2010. 

Demographics

The borough counted  7,527 residents that made up 2,476 households and 2,033 families in 2010. There were 2,541 housing units within the community. The racial breakdown of the population was the following: 

  • 86.21% white
  • 5.04% African American
  • 5.01% Hispanic or Latino
  • 4.65% Asian
  • 0.04% Native American
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 1.37% other races
  • 2.70% two or more races

The income average per household was $160,511 in 2010. Men averaged $111,968 versus $85,938 per year for women. Some of the top occupations held by the townspeople include:

  • 23.7% management
  • 12.1% administration
  • 11.9% sales
  • 9.6% business
  • 8.2% legal 
  • 6.3% education
  • 4.0% entertainment
