Mountain Lakes is a borough located within Morris County, New Jersey. The area is considered a suburb of New York City even though it is a 49-minute drive from the Big Apple. Herbert Hapgood founded the town in 1910. He formed a planned community full of stucco homes that were referred to as the Hapgoods. The architectural style of the area consisted of colonial and craftsman features. As many as 200 were sold by the end of 1912. The area had expanded to 600 homes by 1923, and in 1924 the area became an independent town.

Historical Landmark

The Grimes Homestead was built in the 18th century off Craven Road and was home to Dr. John Grimes. Dr. Grimes, a practicing Quaker, was born in 1802 in the home. Dr. Grimes was known for aiding the runaway slaves during the times of the Underground Railroad and was once caught and arrested. Unfortunately, the home is not on display for the public to visit or view but is privately owned as a residence.

Although the area was home to the Grimes Homestead that aided the Underground Railroad, after the formation of the Hapgood's community, it took on the discriminating gentleman's agreement. This agreement prevented many undesirable groups from moving in, including:

  • African-Americans
  • Jews
  • Latinos
  • Catholics

The agreement has long since been forgotten, but the area remains one of the least diverse communities in the state. However, the following is the ancestral breakdown of the area:
