Getting to Know Haddon Heights, NJ

The car accident attorneys in Haddon Heights, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, offer the following historical details about the neighborhood for your enjoyment.

Haddon Heights

Haddon Heights is a 226.08-acre borough that is situated in the southern region of Camden County, New Jersey. County Road 551 Spur creates the borough's northern border, and North Black Horse Pike forms the western edge. Little Timber Creek flows along part of the neighborhood's southern boundary and separates it from Bellmawr and Barrington.

History

John Hinchman originally settled the area in 1699. He built a house in 1720 that would later become the home of American Revolutionary War hero Colonel Joseph Ellis. The house still stands, located on Sycamore Street, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Benjamin A. Lippincott constructed a passenger station in 1890 in the center of his land. The station served the Atlantic City Railroad. The town was planned using a grid system, and a community was developed. Due to the proximity of Haddonfield and the town's high elevation, the town was named Haddon Heights. In 1904, it was officially incorporated as a borough.

Neighborhood

Located in Haddon Heights Park are the Haddon Heights Log Cabins, formerly known as the historic Boy Scout Cabins. For years the cabins served the Boy Scouts along with many other groups such as the Haddon Heights Youth Association and the Shuffleboard league. Unfortunately, the cabins became unusable and were almost condemned. Thanks to the Mayor and Council in 2009, the structures were restored and are now available for rent. They offer the following amenities for their guests:

  • 40-Person Capacity
  • Handicap-Accessible Bathroom Facilities
  • Audiovisual Equipment
  • Air Conditioning
  • Gas Fireplace
  • Table & Chairs
  • Small Kitchenette Area
