The slip and fall lawyers in Hibernia, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group have shared the following details showcasing the community.
The unincorporated community of Hibernia is found within the Rockaway Township that is located in Morris County, New Jersey. The community makes up the ZIP code 07842. The neighborhood sits at an elevation of 538 feet and includes Hibernia Brook. The main roadway through the town is Green Pond Road, but others include Holly Road, Church Street, and School Road.
The neighborhood's history surrounds the mines that date back to 1722. Along the Rockaway River, Joshua Ball bought land in 1753 that would become the mines. During the American Revolutionary War, the Adventure Furnace was constructed at the mine, and ore was smelted to provide the Continental Army with shot and ordnance. However, the furnace deteriorated by 1850, and forges were supplied at Powerville and Beach Glen.
The railroad construction allowed for transit from mine to mine, and between 1854 and 1885, the mine produced 1.8 million tons of ore. After about 200 years of the mining as many as 5 million tons of ore, the mine was abandoned in 1916.
Despite portions of the tract of mines, like the Glendon Tunnel, being blasted shut in 1989, they were reopened to become the home of many thousands of bats. Bat conservationists had worked to preserve the approximate 30,000 bat population that hibernated in the mines during the winter, but in 2010 many died from an outbreak of white-nose syndrome.
The Methodist Episcopal Church, located on Green Pond Road, was built in 1869 to give the miners a place to worship. The iron mining companies pulled together the funds to build the Carpenter Gothic architectural style church. The church became used as the Rockaway Township Free Public Library in 2011.
The community is home to the Hibernia Inn, located off of the main road, Green Pond Road. The inn has been in business for more than 42 years and offers the residents and guests a menu full of Italian cuisine options, including:
