An Abridged History of Hoboken, NJ

The dog bite attorneys in Hoboken, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group have shared the following details on the community's history.

Hoboken

The town is situated in the eastern region of Hudson County, New York. Newport lies to its south and Weehawken to its north. The Heights are across Manhattan Avenue on the western edge while the Hudson River flows along its eastern border. This 1280-acre neighborhood is a coastal town with several parks located along the river edge. The main roadways include Clinton Street, Willow Avenue, Washington Street, and New York Avenue.

History

The Hackensack territory was home to the Lenni-Lenape Native American Indian tribe. Henry Hudson was the first European settler who arrived in 1609. Hudson was an Englishman who worked for the Dutch East India Company and searched the Northwest Passage to Asia. The land was sold to Michael Reyniersz Pauw, the mayor of Amsterdam, by the Lenape Native Americans in 1630. His purchase cost him the following trade goods:

  • 80 fathoms of wampum, or shell beads
  • 20 fathoms of cloth
  • 12 kettles
  • six guns
  • two blankets
  • one double kettle
  • half a barrel of beer

The English took possession of the town in 1664, and it was rendered to Nicolas Verlett in 1668. The area was part of East Jersey before becoming part of Bergen County around 1674. William Bayard purchased the land, but the Revolutionary Government of New Jersey seized it at the end of the Revolutionary War. At the auction, the land was referred to as William Bayard's farm at Hoebuck. It was incorporated as a township in 1849 but became a city in 1855 due to the population growth.

Neighborhood

Along the Hudson River edge are several parks. One that offers spectacular views of the waterway and the New York skyline is Sinatra Park. The park boasts of green space to enjoy but also offers the following amenities:

  • a kayak launch
  • an outdoor amphitheater
  • soccer fields
  • fishing piers
  • concession stands

Not too far south is Pier C Park that offers close to a 360-degree view of the waterway. Its guests can enjoy a playground, splash area, and promenade. Across the street from Sinatra Park is Stevens Park, with a large dog park and space for them to run.
