The area of Kresson is located within Voorhees Township. This unincorporated community is situated in the eastern region of Camden County, New Jersey. The intersection of Kresson Road and Kresson Gibbsboro Road is the center of the community. Route 73 runs north and south through the center. Willow Ridge is located to the north and Union Mills to the south. It is just four miles to the east of Glendale.
The first inhabitants were the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribe. They hunted the forests and planted crops. Many arrowheads can still be found on the land and near the lakes that they fished. The area was home to a large population of African Americans during the early 1800s. Clarence Jackson, the father of the baseball hall-of-famer, Reggie Jackson, was raised in the area.
After the establishment of Camden County in 1844, the area began to expand and more communities began to form within the area. Along with Kresson, the following were formed:
Prior to its current name, the area was known as Pendleton, Milford, and Dutchtown. Kresson was named after George Kress, who operated a general store. The store provided the townspeople with not only food and clothes but also allowed residents to pick up and drop off mail. The store was located on Route 73 and Kresson Road, and in 1990 a bank was built in its place. Other establishments that would take on his namesake would include Kresson Bible Church and Kresson Elementary School.
In addition to the general store, a glassworks factory was established in the area. The factory experienced financial issues and closed its doors in 1863. the area became known as a German community, with the influx of Bavarians in the area in 1867. The German Lutheran Church was formed on Dutchtown Road and used as one of the first schools.
In 1949, the Kresson Volunteer Fire Company was created. The firehouse was the center of the community for entertainment. It would host weekly movies and even had a dance floor.
