Lake Como

The borough of Lake Como is located in the southeastern section of Monmouth County in the state of New Jersey. The town covered 166.4 acres, with the body of water Lake Como and Polypod Brook forming the southern border. The bordering communities include Belmar, West Belmar, Spring Lake, and Spring Lake Heights.

History

The borough was incorporated in 1924, taking land from Wall Township. However, the area began settlement as far back as 1693. One of the early settlers was farm owner Jeremiah Newman. He originally worked the land for farming but saw more potential as a waterfront community. Newman divided up his farmland and sold the beachfront property for $1.00 per acre to promote residential development. His home still stands on 18th Avenue and is over 150 years, make it one of the community's oldest houses. 

Neighborhood

The main strip of retail and restaurants is down Main Street. Some popular eateries and bars include:

Demographics

The community had 1,806 residents in 2010. This population consisted of 824 households and 391 families. This was a decrease of 2.6% from the population counted in 2000, following an increase of 21.9% from 1990 to 2000. The racial breakdown of the borough was the following:

  • 82.89% white
  • 6.14% African American
  • 18.31% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.85% Native American
  • 1.19% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 6.82% other races
  • 2.10% two or more races

In addition to English, the residents speak Spanish and Slavic languages. As many as 14% of the residents were born outside of the United States. Some of the ancestries the townspeople commonly identify with include:

  • Irish
  • Italian
  • German
  • Polish
  • English

The median income per borough household was $76,576 in 2010. A family income averaged $84,821. Men brought in an average of  $58,173 per year, while women made $49,444 on average. The most common occupations held by the community members included:

  • 15.7% construction
  • 13.4% healthcare
  • 11.6% manufacturing
  • 7.5% education
  • 6.5% retail
  • 5.9% transportation
