Lawnside

The borough of Lawnside is situated in the northern half of Camden County in New Jersey. The community takes up 915.2 acres of land. Nearby towns include Magnolia, Echelon, Woodcrest, Willowdale, and Glendale. The New Jersey Turnpike cuts through the neighborhood, along with White Horse Pike and Interstate 295. Other roadways include Warwick Road, Gloucester Pike, and East Oak Avenue. 

History

Abolitionists, namely Ralph Smith, purchased the land in 1840 to develop a community for freed and escaped slaves and other African Americans. The community became the first independent and self-governing African American town north of the Mason-Dixon line once it was established as a borough in 1926.

It became known as "Snow Hill" and "Free Haven" before it was named after the train station constructed along the Atlantic City Railroad in 1907 by the Reading Railroad.

Historical Landmarks

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, located on South White Horse Pike, was built in 1905. However, this was the fourth to be constructed o the property. The church began in 1815 with just twelve members and held services in the homes of the members. The first church structure was built on land purchased for $40. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the original log cabin church in 1835.

  • Grace Temple Baptist Church - located on East Charleston Avenue
  • Emmanuel Church of God-Christ - situated on Brown Street
  • Church of Annunciation - located on Warwick Road

The Lawnside Historical Society is located on Kings Court. The mid-century house was once the home of the escaped slave, Peter Mott. Mott's original items can still be seen in the building, like a cabinet in the kitchen area. It is one of the oldest buildings within the borough. It played an integral part during the Underground Railroad, with Mott operating as an agent and conductor. 

Neighborhood

Just off of Gloucester Pike is the Historic Lawnside Village. Some of the retail stores within the plaza include:

  • ShopRite
  • Habitat for Humanity Retore and Donation Center

Education

The residents can send their children to the public schools that are part of the Lawnside School District and the Haddon Heights School District. Some of these include:

  • Lawnside School - located on East Charleston Avenue
  • Haddon Heights High School - located on Second Avenue

Demographics

The borough counted 2,945 residents in 2010. This population created 1,103 households and 762 families within its boundaries. There is a variety of racial and ethnic groups represented in the community, including the following:

  • 4.21% white
  • 88.83% African American
  • 4.38% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.65% Native American
  • 1.43% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 3.23% two or more races
  • 1.66% other races

The neighborhood income averaged $56,006 in 2010, increasing from $45,192 in 2000. Some of the commonly represented occupations within the working population included the following:
