Linwood

The city of Linwood is situated in the southern region of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. The city takes up 2,694.4 acres and includes 256 acres of water as it sits between Scull Bay and Patcong Creek. The neighboring towns are Somers Point, Long Point, Steelmanville, and Northfield. Some of the main roadways in the city are Shore Road, New Road, Wabash Avenue, and West Avenue. 

History

The area was once called Leedsville until a post office was established in 1880. Due to another post office within New Jersey with the name, the area was renamed. Some of the other names that were on the table for the residents to consider included:

  • Brinola
  • Geneva
  • Pearville
  • Viola

The area was first incorporated into a borough in 1889 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On April 27, 1931, it was reincorporated into a city. 

The city includes a 111-acre historic district that is situated between Maple Avenue, Poplar Avenue, and Shore Road. The Linwood Historical Society is located on West Poplar Avenue using the building that was once the Leedsville Schoolhouse built in 1873. The school was renamed the Linwood Borough School No. 1 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It served as the town's school from 1873 until 1908 and as the municipal hall until 1965. It now serves as the Historic Society building and a museum for visitors to tour.
