A Brief History of Little Falls, NJ

The worker's comp lawyers in Little Falls, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group present the following closer look into the neighborhood's history and highlights.

Little Falls

Little Falls is a township situated in the southern region of Passaic County, New Jersey. The 1836.8-acre township consists of three subdivisions, Great Notch, Little Falls or The Center of Town, and Singac. Some of its neighboring communities are Clifton, Fairfield, and Woodland Park. Two of its borders are created by the Passaic River and Route 46.

History

The town was named after the waterfall located next to the dam on the Passaic River near the old location of the Beattie Mill. The carpet mill once stood where condominiums now are. The mill was built in 1844 and was torn down in 1982.

The location near the falls was also home to a Revolutionary War encampment in 1780. General George Washington had made his headquarters in Wayne but sent thousands of soldiers into the surrounding areas, including Little Falls, Hawthorne, Totowa, and Woodland Park. These areas provided the perfect protection of the Watchung Mountains while they kept a lookout for incoming attacks.

A break in the mountains, known as the Great Notch, served the soldiers as a cut through. This area is now where Route 46 travels. Most of the town was likely traveled by the Continental Army soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

Neighborhood

The town is home to the sport's attraction, the Yogi Berra Stadium that serves the American professional baseball team, the New Jersey Jackals. The stadium was built in 1998 on the Montclair State University campus and had a 5,000 person capacity. In the same year, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center was added. This museum has sports memorabilia from Yogi Berra's career as well as Yankee Stadium artifacts. In addition to the memorabilia, the museum offers the following services for the community:

  • guided school tours
  • anti-bullying and sportsmanship assemblies
  • summer camps - including baseball and softball camps
  • educational programs
