Merchantville

The borough of Merchantville is situated in the northern region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. The small community takes up 377.6 acres and sits just south of Pennsauken Township and north of Cherry Hill. Other neighboring communities include Iron Rock, Collingswood, and Dudley. 

History

The neighborhood was mainly farmed until around 1851. With the railroad expanding into the area, the land was quickly purchased. Initially, the area was part of the Township of Stockton, but residents voted to become a borough in 1874.

The construction of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, which began in 1914, led to further growth in the area. Lots were purchased following World War I, and after the bridge's completion in 1926, the regions developed into the community it is now.

Historical Landmarks

The town has some of its buildings that date back to the early 1900s, such as the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. The church was founded in 1903, but its actual roots in the town date back to 1850. The cornerstone was first laid in 1906, and as many as 400 members attended its dedication on April 26, 1908. 

Parks and Recreation

The borough is home to the Wellwood Memorial Park, located on Maple Avenue, between Hamilton and Linden Avenues. Within the park is a World War I monument that includes a stone that was erected in honor of two members of The Sons And Daughters Of The Pilgrims. Additionally, the park has the following amenities for its visitors to enjoy: 

  • two tennis courts
  • a ball field
  • a playground
  • a gazebo
  • a snack stand

The Merchantville Community Center and Park are located on Somerset Avenue. The center hosts many social events throughout the year in addition to housing a senior center, a ballroom, and a summer recreational program for children. The three-story historical facility offers the following amenities to the community:

  • a tennis court
  • playground structures
  • swing sets
  • a full basketball court
  • picnic tables
  • a volleyball court

Demographics

In 2010 the borough had 3,821 residents that made up 1,574 households and 966 families. The diversity of the community was as follows:

  • 76.58% white
  • 11.62% Hispanic or Latino
  • 13.01% African American
  •  0.37% Native American
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 2.28% Asian
  • 3.30% two or more races
  • 4.42% other races

The average income per household was $62,358 in 2010. Men averaged $49,926, while women averaged an annual income of $41,369. Some of the different occupations held within the town's workforce included:

  • 13.10% management positions
  • 11.30% business and financial occupations
  • 9.39% sales jobs
