In 1869 railroad construction began in the town just as the Morris and Essex Railroad started to build a freight line. The station served on the Boonton Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. It was 20.8 miles from the terminus at Hoboken Terminal along the Hudson River. It was 12.8 miles from the western terminus at Denville that allowed connections with Morris and Essex Railroad.

Although some of the track south of Pequannock was removed, the station remains as the sole track through Mountain View.
