New Milford

The borough of New Milford is located in the central region of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The 1,484.8-acre borough is just south of the Oradell Reservoir located in Oradell. Bergenfield is to the east of the town and River Edge is to the west across the Hackensack River. The main roadways include River Road, Madison Avenue, Milford Avenue, and Graphic Boulevard. 

History

The borough was officially incorporated on March 11, 1922, replacing what was left of Palisades Township that was created in 1871. One of the area's first settlers was a French Huguenot, David Demarest. He purchased land in 1677 after sailing up the Hackensack River. It is credited as the birthplace of Bergen County and most of the original landowners are buried in the French Huguenot-Demarest Cemetery located on River Road. 

The Demarest family owned an estate in the center of the town and operated a grist mill. The mill was one of many located on the Old Bridge that helped the area become an industrial center. 

Historical Landmarks

Aside from the Jacobus Demarest House built in 1680 and located on River Road, there are several historic houses that have been included on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these include:

• the Zabriskie House - built in the 1700s and located in Old Bridge
• the Demarest-Bloomer House - built in and located on River Edge Avenue
• the Campbell-Christie House - built in 1774 and originally located on Henley Avenue before moving to River Edge

Neighborhood

Within the borough, the community has a lot to offer its residents. The Art Center of Northern New Jersey, established in 1957, offers residents art classes for all ages, in addition to a painting studio, gallery, and photography darkroom. Other schools in the neighborhood include:

Demographics

In 2010 the census counted 16,341 residents, including 6,141 households and 4,207 families within the borough. this was a decrease of 0.4% from the count of 16,400 in 2000. The racial breakdown of the residents included: 

• 70.51% white 
• 3.72% African American
• 13.63% Hispanic or Latino
• 0.12% Native American
• 19.36% Asian
• 0.02% Pacific Islander
• 3.59% other races
• 2.64% two or more races

The area's median income per household was $75,075 allowing for a margin of error of $9,822. The median income for a family was $96,885. The average income for men was $62,817 while women brought in an average of $51,630. The occupational makeup for the working residents was the following: 

• 13.81% sales and service jobs
• 12.40% management and executive positions
• 11.31% healthcare professions
