North Arlington

The borough of North Arlington is located within the southern region of Bergen County in New York. The community's western edge reaches the Hackensack River while Jauncey Avenue creates the northern border and Belleville Turnpike the southern. The Passaic River forms the western border just past River Road. Its neighboring communities are Lyndhurst to the north, Arlington to the south, and Belleville to the west.

History

The town was part of the New Barbadoes Neck, the colonial period name for the peninsula formed by the Hackensack River and the Passaic River. It was incorporated into a borough in 1896 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The town was the site for the assembly of the first steam engine, the Newcomen steam engine, in 1755. Josiah Hornblower assembled the engine for John Schuyler to use to pump water out of the copper mine. The area was the home of the first copper mine in America, the Schuyler Copper Mine.

Holy Cross Cemetery

The cemetery, located in the town's center, was established in 1915 and operated under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. This 208-acre area is host to as many burial sites as 289,600. Some notable people that are buried in the cemetery include:

Parks and Recreation

With the Passaic River flowing along the western edge of town the residents have many opportunities to take advantage of the waterfront. The Passaic River Park offers walks along the river and duck watching as you picnic on the green fields. The 85-acre Riverside County Park also offers waterfront trails and picnic tables by the river. Rowing programs take place during the spring months.

The area is home to several schools, both private and public, such as:

Per the 2010 census, the neighborhood population was 15,392 and consisted of 6,295 households and 4,117 families. This was an increase of 1.4% after an increase of 10.1% from 1990 to 2000. The racial breakdown of the community is the following:

• 7.87% Asian
• 0.23% Native American
• 0.01% Pacific Islander
• 6.03% other races
• 1.84% two or more races

The annual median household income was $71,232. The neighborhood has a mix of those employed in blue-collar and white-collar occupations. The occupational breakdown of the working adults is the following:
