The unincorporated community of Ashland is a census-designated place (CDP) within the township of Cherry Hill. It sits in the northern section of Camden County, New Jersey. The CDP takes up 1,868.16 acres, including 19% or 3.2 acres of water, such as Cooper River. The neighboring communities include Coffins Corner, Echelon, Willowdale, Somerdale, Lawnside, and Glendale. 

Early History

The early residents of the area made up the Osage Tribe. They were part of the Midwest Sioux. The Lenni Lenape set up camps throughout the region and took advantage of the resources found within the forests, such as hunting and edible plants. They would fish the waterways found throughout the greater area using bark canoes and log cutouts. Arrowheads are found in the areas still to this day. 

The community began to take form as a residential area after the completion of the railroad. A general store that also posed as the local post office was found near the train shop. The town was named after Henry Clay's estate in Kentucky and was the first stop by the stagecoaches. 

In 1908, the Presbyterian Church was dedicated at the corner of Evesham Road and Alpha Avenue. The following could be found around the train station:

  • a delicatessen
  • the Lumber & Millworks


The community is still a pathway for travelers along the New Jersey Turn Pike and Interstate 295. Visitors and residents can enjoy the following establishments found within the community:

  • Whitcraft Farms - located on Kresson Road
  • XL Sports World Cherry Hill - located on Kresson Road
  • Arnie’s Gourmet Butcher Shop & Culinaria - located on Haddonfield-Berlin Road

  • Michaelangelo's Italian Restaurant 


Most of the residents attend public schools. Some of the schools, both public and private, they could attend include:

  • James H. Johnson Elementary School
  • Brookfield Academy
  • Woodcrest Elementary School
  • Rosa International Middle School
  • Horace Mann Elementary School


The population of the unincorporated community was 8,302 residents and made up 3,084 households and 2,224 families. The racial breakdown of the community members was the following:

  • 80.28% white
  • 7.03% African American
  • 5.78% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.11% Native American
  • 9.06% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 1.26% other races
  • 2.25% two or more races

The average income per household was $68,063 in 2000. A family income averaged $75,232. Men brought in n average yearly salary of $51,113 versus $37,234 for women. The occupational breakdown of the working residents included the following:

  • 50.4% executive, management, and professional positions
  • 25.1% sales and service jobs
  • 13.2% clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations 
  • 11.4% manufacturing and laborer occupations
