Parsippany

The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, or just Parsippany, is situated in the eastern region of Morris County within New Jersey. The township covers 16,224 acres and includes the unincorporated communities of Tabor, Lake Hiawatha, Lake Intervale, and Troy Hills, among others. Neighboring towns include Boonton, Pine Brook, Hanover, and Mountain Lakes.

History

The town was named after the Lenape Native American's word parsipanong, which translates as "the place where the river winds through the valley." The Dutch claimed the area around 1611 and began trading with the Native Americans. The Native Americans offered fur and food while the Dutch offered the following items for trade:

  • metal pots
  • knives
  • guns
  • axes
  • blankets

However, in 1643, a series of wars broke out between them, and trade stopped. The hostile relations lasted from 1643 until 1660, preventing further colonization of the area by the Dutch. In 1664 the English arrived upon three ships and quickly took control of the land and the fort.

The township was officially incorporated into a township on March 12, 1928.

Neighborhood

The township is home to the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms. Craftsman Farms was owned by German-American Gustav Stickley. Stickley began his furniture business in New York before purchasing tracts of land in the neighborhood in 1908 that would become the Craftsman Farms. His estate became the home of the Stickley Museum in 1989 in order to preserve the historical elements and prevent it from being developed. Some of the collections included at the museum include:

  • furniture
  • metalwork
  • textiles
  • ceramics

In the early 1930s a huge tract of land was purchased by The New York Daily Mirror, a part of The Mirror Holding Corp. After digging out 159 acres, a dam was erected forming Lake Parsippany. The company sold lots surrounding the lake for $98.50 each.

Demographics

The township's population was 53,238 in 2010. This included 20,279 households and 14,094 families. This was an increase of 5.1% since 2000, following an increase of 4.5% from 1990 to 2000. The racial makeup of the area was the following:
