The personal injury attorneys in Pennsauken Township, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, have kindly sponsored the following history on the neighborhood.
The Township of Pennsauken is located in the southern half of Camden County, New Jersey. The Delaware River flows along the western edge of the town, while the Pennsauken Creek flows along the northern border. Some main roadways in the area include North and South Cresent Boulevard, or U.S. Route 130, and New Jersey Route 90, the Betsy Ross Bridge Toll road that crosses the Delaware River.
The township was incorporated on February 1892, taking land from the former Stockton Township. The exact origin of the town's name is not fully clear, but it is thought to have derived from the Lenni Lenape Native American tribes that dwelled in the area before the European settlers came. One translation of "Pindasenauken"s suggested it meant tobacco pouch. Another legend has it referring to Penn of William Penn, founder of many of the areas.
In 1933 the area became home to the country's first drive-in movie theater, the Camden Drive-in. Richard Hollingshead received the first patent for a drive-in movie theater on May 16, 1933. Using an investment of only $30,000, he opened the theater on June 6, 1933. The first movie showing was a British comedy, Wives Beware, featuring Adolphe Menjou. The initial entry price was 25 cents per car and 25 cents per person. Unfortunately, the sound system was only heard at the front of the lot due to the only three speakers being mounted at the front.
