Pittsgrove

The Township of Pittsgrove is situated in the eastern region of Salem County in New Jersey. The township covers 29,280 acres which include 1.87% water, such as Palatine Lake, Muddy Run, Indian Run, Centerton Pond, Parvin Lake, Rainbow Lake, and Thundgust Lake. The neighboring communities are Elmer, Upper Pittsgrove, Deerfield, Franklin, Friendship, Daretown, and Newfield. Some of the communities within the township are Alliance, Brotmanville, Centerton, Daretown, Greenville, Norma, Norma Station. 

History

In 1769, the township was formed by a Royal charter or a formal grant. It was incorporated as a township in 1798 along with 104 newly established townships within the state. It received its name from the 1st Earl of Chatham, William Pitt. Pitt also served as Great Britain's Prime Minister during the 18th century. He led as a political leader during the victory over France in the Seven Years' War. 

Historical Landmark

The community is home to the Moshe Bayuk House, located on Gershal Avenue. In 1899 the house was built for Moshe Bayuk. Bayuk founded the Alliance Colony, an agricultural colony for Jewish immigrants that fled Russia to escape religious persecution. Although the house is in poor condition, grants have been established for the current owners, the Jewish Federation of Cumberland County, to restore it in hopes of turning it into a heritage center. 

Since 1706, the Ye Olde Centerton Inn has been in operation. It is the oldest in the state and second in the country. The Inn currently serves as a restaurant that offers inside dining as well as catering options. They are known for their seafood selections and their steaks dinners. The decor has been kept to reflect the vintage style of the architectural charm. Each of the six dining rooms offers a different personality with its decor and atmosphere.

Within the township were 9,393 people, 3,307 households, and 2,576 families per the census in 2010. This was a population increase of 5.6% from the count of 8,893 residents in 2000. The racial breakdown included the following:

  • 88.17% white
  • 6.97% African American
  • 4.80% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.42% Native American
  • 0.94% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 1.39% other races
  • 2.10% two or more races

The income median for the township's households was $74,348 in 2010, an increase from $56,687 in 2000. Men averaged a yearly income of $56,300, and women averaged $38,056 per year. A few of the most commonly held occupations include:
