Port Reading

The unincorporated community of Port Reading is a census-designated place, or CDP, that helps to form Woodbridge Township, situated in the northeastern section of Middlesex County in New Jersey. The community took up 1,854.72 acres, including 419.2 acres of water, such as Port Reading Reach of Arthur Kill. Smith Creek and Smith Creek Pond also flow within the community. 

History

The town was constructed by the Reading Railroad of Pennsylvania. The railroad used the area to serve its needs for coal and as a new branch line known as Port Reading Railroad. The line started in Manville, near Bound Brook, and continued into the community. 

An oil refinery, known as either the Port Reading Refinery or Hess Refinery, was constructed in 1958 by Hess Oil under the leadership of Leon Hess. Leon was the founder of the Hess Corporation and the owner of the New York Jets. The refinery closed down in 2013. 

Neighborhood

The area is home to the Alvin P. Williams Memorial Park. The park is located on the Sewaren Peninsula and covers 36 acres. It was named in honor of Alvin P. Williams, a Woodbridge Township Police Officer that was killed in duty as he attempted to rescue some children off the coast of the stream in 1979. Williams was able to save four children, but two others died along with him. The park offers its guest the following:

  • a playground
  • an overlook pavilion
  • gardens
  • bike and walkways

In 2010 the community was home to  3,728 residents. They made up 1,283 households and 998 families. The racial breakdown was the following:

  • 79.75% white
  • 7.19% African American
  • 0.24% Native American
  • 17.84% Hispanic or Latino
  • 4.99% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 5.53% other races
  • 2.31% two or more races

The average income per household was $58,945 in 2000. A family income averaged $64,259 per year. The median income for men was $50,142 versus $30,283 for women. The occupational breakdown included the following:

  • 19.8% administrative
  • 12.3% sales
  • 10.9% education
  • 8.6% transportation
  • 7.5% production
  • 5.7% management
