The unincorporated community of Powerville is located in the Boonton Township within Morris County, New Jersey. The neighborhood is just north of Boonton and Mountain Lakes while being south of Taylortown and Rockaway Valley. Rockaway River flows through the community, and the 550-acre Tourne Park is at the southwestern border.
The community is centered around the Rockaway River’s Powerville Dam. Although it is not the main source for the economic wealth of the township, during the 18th century, it was lined with foundries and slitting mills. The mills utilized the black stone that the Natives used to make axes, called magnetite, also known as iron ore.
The area continued to grow, and by the 1800s, a bridge was built across the river by Conrad Hopler. Hopler later sold the dam and bridge to Joseph Scott, who owned a tannery. A second dam was constructed near the Morris Canal. By the mid-1800s, the mills were producing 450 tons of hoop and rod annually. However, the high price of charcoal made profit unattainable.
The area continued to grow despite the downturn of the iron industry. A paper mill was built across the river. Today some iron industries still remain in the area, and one took the place of the paper mill.
There are several parks within the neighborhood. At the south end of the community, Griffith Park offers a historical look into the mills and iron industry along the Rockaway River. Guests can kayak along the river as they view and listen to the falls. A great place to enter the river and rent kayaks is at Kromka Sporting Adventures. At the north end of the area is the Rockaway Valley Aerodrome Fields. The RVA Feilds offer the community many athletic fields and a playground.
Just off of Main Street is a family-owned Art Glass Studio. The studio is right across from the Morris Canal. After you tour the glass studio, you can cross the street to view the scenic stop on the canal.
