Ridgewood

The village of Ridgewood is situated in the western region of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The village spans 3,712 acres which include 38.4 acres of water, such as the Hohokus Brook and the Zabriskie Brook. Some of the neighboring communities include Ho-Ho-Kus, Waldwick, Midland Park, Glen Rock, and Hawthorne. 

History

One of the village's first settlers was Johannes Van Emburgh, who built the first home in 1700. Van Emburgh purchased his 250 acres in 1698. David Ackerman and his family built their home off of East Saddle River in 1750. Other families that were early settlers in the area included:

  • Albert J. Zabriskie
  • James C. Rose

On November 20, 1894, the village was created and was named based on the region's terrain. 

Historical Landmarks

The community is home to many historical landmarks and sites. Some of these include:

  • 1787 - Ackerman House - located at 222 Doremus Avenue
  • 1895 - Beech Street School - located at 49 Cottage Place
  • 1725 - Old Paramus Reformed Church - located at 570 North Maple Avenue 
  • 1817 - Van Dien House - located at 627 Grove Street 

The Ridgewood Historical & Preservation, which is located in the old schoolhouse that was built in 1872, works to preserve the history of the community. The building also houses the historical schoolhouse museum that showcases fine art from the 19th century as well as pottery from the Lenape Indians. 

Demographics

According to the census taken in 2010, the village had 24,958 residents, 8,456 households, and 6,756 families within its borders. The racial breakdown of the village's townspeople was the following:

  • 82.21% white 
  • 1.59% African American
  • 5.27% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.06% Native American
  • 12.99% Asian
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 1.06% other races
  • 2.06% two or more races

The average yearly income for the area's households was $104,286 in 2000. A family income median was $121,848. Men brought in an average of  $90,422 versus $50,248 for women on average per year. A few of the top professions held by the employed residents include:
