The personal injury attorneys in Roseland, NJ at Garden State Justice Group invite you to discover more about the borough's history.
The borough of Roseland is located in the western region of Essex County in New Jersey. The community is neighbors to West Caldwell, Livingston, West Orange, and Essex Falls. The Essex Freeway travels through the borough along with the Eisenhower Parkway, Eagle Rock Avenue, Livingston Avenue, and Harrison Avenue.
Initially, the area was part of the Horseneck Tract, which consisted of Fairfield, Essex Fells, Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove, Roseland, and parts of Livingston and West Orange. Early settlers traded the section that contained 14,000 acres from the Lenape Native Americans in 1702 for good amounting to $325.
The community was first known as Centerville but changed in 1874.
From 1938 until 1972, a miniature railroad known as the Becker Farm Railroad or the Centerville & Southwestern Railroad operated within the community. The train made round trips for the two-mile stretch from Centerville and Peachtree Junction. Despite its size, the train operated just like its normal size counterparts. Unfortunately, in 1968 the FDOT condemned a portion of the tracts to make way for Interstate 280. Further issues with ownership of the farm in 1972 caused the closure of the railroad. Vestiges can still be seen throughout the area.
Another historical landmark is the Williams-Harrison House, located on Eagle Rock Avenue. The house was built in 1824 and belonged to one of the earliest settlers. It now serves as the location for the borough's historical society.
The first school was established in 1908 for the borough's growing population. This only happened after the borough was incorporated into an independent borough the same day. Prior petitions were cast down when it was part of Livingston Township.
Today, children can attend public schools within the Roseland School District or the West Essex Regional School District, such as:
