Roselle Park

The 787.2-acre borough is situated in the central region of Union County, New Jersey. It is located just north of Roselle and to the east of Aldene. Westfield Avenue runs along the southern border as Chesnut Street travels north and south through its center. Galloping Hill Road forms the eastern border. The city of Elizabeth is just 3.2 miles to the east via Westfield Avenue. 

History

Samuel Williams was the first settler to develop in the area in 1700. Its name came from the Roselle Land Improvement Company. The neighborhood was officially incorporated as a borough in 1901. This came after many complaints that the area required certain public services, and it suffered from the following:

  • lacked a modern sewage system
  • poor schools
  • neglected roads
  • minimal public safety measures

During the Revolutionary War, Galloping Hill Road played an integral part in transporting messages from General George Washington to Governor Livingston. It is also said to the pathway taken by the British as they traveled to the Battle of Connecticut Farms. Another event tied to the area was the corner of Colonial Road, and Galloping Hill Road is believed to be the spot that American General William Crane was killed by the British. 

Neighborhood

  • 0.15% Native American
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 7.52% other races
  • 2.53% two or more races

The average annual household income was $61,923 in 2010, which was an increase from $53,717 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the employed residents is the following:

  • 9.42% educational and teaching positions
  • 9.12% professional and management roles
