The History of Sea Girt, NJ

The car accident lawyers in Sea Girt, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group would like to share some of the neighborhood's history.

Sea Girt

Sea Girt is a borough located in the southeastern section of Monmouth County in New Jersey. It only takes up 934.4 acres, of which 256 acres are water, such as Wreck Pond, that connects to the Atlantic Ocean. Stockton Lake helps form the southern border of the borough, and 8th Avenue travels along the western border.

History

The area was incorporated into its own borough on March 29, 1917. It took land from Wall Township and was named for Comm. Robert F. Stockton's estate. Stockton was a prominent landowner from 1835 and a United States Navy commodore. He also served as a U. S. senator representing New Jersey, following in his father's footsteps. He purchased the land and named it Sea Girt, and when land developers purchased the area in 1875, they retained the name.

Historical Landmarks

The Sea Girt Light marks the inlet leading into Wreck Pond. The lighthouse hosted the country's first radio beacon mounted at the shore in 1921. Although the lighthouse tower was constructed around 1800, it was deemed unsafe and remained unlit. It was reconstructed with an L-shaped house made of brick to support its height and was first lit in 1896.

Another great historical landmark in the borough is the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey, located on Camp Drive. The museum offers a look into the past of Dutch, British, and Swedish colonization through the War. It highlights the diversity of the New Jersey soldiers, paying close attention to the details in their personal experiences. Some of the things that can be found include the largest collections of New Jersey related Civil War materials, such as:

  • copies of diaries
  • letters
  • newspaper clippings
  • memoirs
  • regimental histories
  • articles
