Shark River Hills

The unincorporated New Jersey community, Shark River Hills, is located in the Neptune Township in Monmouth County. The coastal neighborhood takes up 627.84 acres, of which 57.6 are water. 

History

The area was named after the elevation at its highest point that overlooks the Shark River. Initially, the area donned the Native American name, Nolletquesset. The first major development to the area would be the Country Poor Farm in 1801. The Shark River Hills Company was formed upon 728 acres in 1913. However, the area would not be developed for residential use until the 1920s. 

The first residential real estate would go on sale following the completion of Tucker's Point Bridge in 1923. Residential development would continue along with the addition of the Shark River Hills Country Club in 1924. 

In 1954 the Shark River Hills Yacht Club would add to the coastal community. Other construction along South Riverside Drive would include the following:

  • 1958 - Shark River Hills Marina
  • 1959 - Tides Motel
  • 1961 - Shark River Hills Playground

The area is home to only one school, Shark River Hills Elementary School, built in 1956. 

Neighborhood

The median real estate cost in Shark River Hills is $431,021 and is higher than 62.8% of other neighborhoods in the state. In contrast, the average monthly rent runs $2,279 and is lower than 50.1% of other communities in New Jersey. 

The household income in the neighborhood averaged $68,508 in 2000. With most residents working in executive positions, the occupational makeup is the following:

  • 13.3% clerical, assistant, or technical support roles
