Squankum

The unincorporated community of Squankum is located within Howell Township in the southern region of Monmouth County, New Jersey. The community is surrounded by Farmingdale, Lakewood, Wall Township, Allenwood, and Carmerville. Some of the main roadways within the neighborhood include Interstate 195, County Road 524, and County Road 547.

History

The region was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The name stems from the Lenape, meaning "places where level spirits dwell." 

The early settlement in the area was fueled by agriculture and patterned off of the locations of high-quality soil. Several cranberry bogs were constructed along the Marsh Bog Brook during the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Many of the bogs were forced to close down due to the intrusion of saltwater with the freshwater in the 1930s.

The community is home to the Squankum United Methodist Church, which was established in 1834. 

Park and Recreation

The Allaire State Park is situated in the northeast corner of the community. It spreads across Howell Township and Wall Township. The park is 3,205 acres and was originally created in 1940. Within the park is the main attraction, the Allaire Village. This historical town includes:

  • foreman's house
  • a church

The Pine Creek Railroad also sits inside the park's borders and is a museum that began in 1962. Many of the trails the park has to offer include:

The residents in the neighborhood are wealthy, making it among the 15% highest income neighborhoods in the country. The working population is employed in the following occupations:

  • 26.9% sales and service jobs
  • 21.2% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 10.8% clerical, assistant, and tech support positions

Within the community, as many as 91.2% of the residents speak English. Other languages include Polish and Spanish. Some of the townspeople most commonly identify their ethnicity or ancestry with the following:
