Teaneck

The Township of Teaneck is located in the southern region of Bergen County in New Jersey. The suburb takes up 3,993.6 acres, of which 3.16% is water, like Teaneck Creek. The neighboring communities include Englewood, Koreatown, Hackensack, Ridgefield Park, and Bergenfield. The Hackensack River flows along the western edge of the township and the Overpeck Creek along the southeastern edge.

Early History

The region was home to several Lenni Lenape Native American camps. Mostly near the Hackensack River's edge and along the Overpeck Creek. One of the main settlements, called Achikinhesackywas, was led by Chief Oratam. Some of the pathways the Natives took became the roadways used today, such as Fycke Lane, River Road, and Queen Anne Road.

The Dutch settled near what is now Teaneck Road and build a series of stone homes, some of which are still standing.

After the Battle of Fort Lee, General George Washington and his troops traveled through the neighborhood. The area and its citizens aided both sides of the conflict. During various times of the war, they were forced to quarter either the British or the American forces.
