The neighborhood of Dayton is located in the city of Newark, situated in the southeastern region of Essex County, New Jersey. The town's zip code is 07114 that also incorporates some of the surrounding areas. The community borders are created by Elizabeth Avenue, East Peddie Street, and Frelinghuysen Avenue. Situated in the center of the neighborhood is Weequahic Lake, surrounded by the Weequahic Park. 

History

The town was named after the American politician Jonathan Dayton. He was known as being the youngest to sign the United States Constitution. He was also known for his roles as the following:

  • a member of the U.S. House of Representatives
  • the fourth Speaker of the United States House of Representatives
  • a member of the U.S. Senate

Neighborhood

The majority of the neighborhood is comprised of the Weequahic Park. The park was built upon the former Waverly Fairgrounds in 1899. The 80-acre Weequahic Lake, Essex County's largest, sits in the center of the 311.33 acres that make up the park. Some of the amenities the park provides to its visitors include:

As per the US census taken in 2010, the town's population, in addition to the other portions of Newark, was 277,140 and included 91,414 households and 62,239 families. This was an increase of 1.3% from 2000 following a 0.6% decrease from 1990 to 2000. The racial breakdown of the population was as follows:

  • 26.3% white 
  • 52.4% African American
  • 33.8% Hispanic or Latino
  • 1.6% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 15.2% other races
  • 3.8% two or more races

The greater area is the second-most racially diverse and 14.5% of its residents were born outside of the country. Some common ancestries found among the residents include:
