Egg Harbor City

The city is situated in the northern region of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. History

A group of German-Americans from Philadelphia founded the city in 1854. They were traveling in search of refuge from being persecuted during the anti-immigrant Know-Nothing movement. The political party began in the 1840s and began to flourish by the 1850s. They sought to reduce the number of immigrants while increasing restrictions on those born in foreign countries. This included a 21-year residency in order to become a citizen. However, the area held firm to the German culture and language for more than 50 years.

The area was named after the many gull eggs that can be found within the region. It was incorporated as a city in 1858, taking portions of land from the Galloway and Mullica Townships.

Historical Landmarks

Within the city is the Round House Museum, located on London Ave. The museum was founded in 1993 and is located in one of the former Neutral Water Health Resort Sanitarium buildings built in 1905. • German heritage items
  • items from Dr. Smith's spa
  • educational articles from School #1, dating back to 1876
