Forest Hill

The unincorporated community of Forest Hill is located in the city of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey. Silver Lake is to the town's west, and Woodside Broadway is to the east. Bloomfield Avenue separates it from Fairmount to the south. Two of the major roadways in the neighborhood include Heller Parkway and Mount Prospect Avenue. 

History

This pre-World War II neighborhood lies in the North Ward and is situated on a ridge between the valley of Branch Brook and the Passaic River. Elias Heller, a file factory owner in North Newark, was the first to develop in the area along the Belleville border. Wealthy residents of Newark began building in the area from the 1870s to the 1920s. Some styles they used included the following:

  • Colonial Revival
  • Gothic Revival
  • Spanish Revival

Historical Landmarks

The area has been well maintained, and many of the historical homes are quite preserved. The northern region of the neighborhood has been deemed the official historic district. Many homeowners open their houses for tours during a certain time of the year presented by the New Jersey Historical Society. 

On The Old Road to Bloomfield is the Sydenham House. The house was built in 1712 and is the oldest private residence in the city. During the early 19th century, the home was expanded, and in the 1950s, it was restored by D.J. and Elizabeth Henderson. 

Demographics

Approximately 34.1% of the residents in the community were born outside of the United States. English is the primary language of 28.1%, while 65.7% speak Spanish. The ancestral breakdown of the community was the following:

  • 37.3% Puerto Rican
  • 13.4% South American
  • 11.4% Dominican
  • 4.4% Italian
  • 2.3% Portuguese 

The neighborhood is predominantly a lower-middle-income neighborhood, and as many as 27.6% of the children live below the poverty line. The breakdown of occupations for the employed adults is the following:

  • 30.9% sales and service occupations
  • 28.4% manufacturing and laborer positions
  • 22.4% clerical, assistant and technical support roles
  • 18.3% executive, management, and professional positions
