Northfield

This 2316.8-acre city is located in Atlantic County, New Jersey. Residents often refer to the town as the Gateway to the Shore due to its proximity to the beaches. Residents can get to the beach that is only seven miles away via the bridge. Linwood is south of the town, and Pleasantville is to the north. Across the Garden State Parkway just outside of its western border is Egg Harbor Township. The main roadways within the neighborhood include Shore Road, Mills Road, and Route 9. 

History

The area was home to the Absegami Native American tribe of the Lenape people were among the first to dwell in the area. They lived off of the resources that the rivers and coast offered. Quakers began settling in the area, and in 1695, John Somers bought 300 acres. Somers also formed a ferry service that crossed the bay into Cape May County. 

As more people began to move into the area during the late 1800s, many municipalities were formed, including Northfield. On March 21, 1905, the area was incorporated into a city. It took from land that was originally part of Egg Harbor Township. 

Parks and Recreation

The 271-acre Birch Grove Park is located off of Burton Avenue in the northwest region of the city. This secluded area of undeveloped natural land was the site of the historical Somers Brick Works. The Northfield Museum that is located in the lower east section of the park offer guest a chance to view a site model from 1910.

The large park offers guests many miles of hiking trails through the wooded areas and alongside the lakes and ponds. Many of the ponds were formed during the excavations for clay. Many species of birds can be spotted throughout the year, including but not limited to the following:

  • Carolina Chickadee
  • Tufted Titmouse
  • White-breasted Nuthatch
  • Golden-crowned Kinglet
  • Juncos
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker

Demographics

The neighborhood's population was 8,624, according to the 2010 census. This included 3,152 households and 2,301 families. From 2000, this was an increase of 11.6%. The majority of the town speak English as their first language, but a few speak Spanish or Chinese. The town's ethnic makeup included the following:

  • 87.14% white 
  • 3.24% African American
  • 8.00% Hispanic or Latino
  • 4.50% Asian
  • 0.19% Native American
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 2.89% other races
  • 2.04% two or more races

The median income per household in the area was $70,980, which was an increase from $56,875 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the working adults was the following:

  • 10.98% sales and service occupations
  • 10.66% educational and teaching positions
  • 10.14% management and executive roles
