Nutley

The township of Nutley is located in the northeastern section of Essex County, New Jersey. The neighborhood includes Avondale and is just south of Delawanna. The eastern border is made up of the Passaic River along with New Jersey Route 21. Eastwick College is located in the southeast section of the neighborhood. 

History

The first European settler was Bastian Van Giesen, a Dutch painter, in 1693. His estate, the Vreeland Homestead, is located on Chestnut Street and currently operates as the Nutley Women's Club. In the early 18th century, a brownstone quarry became the area's first major industry and provided work for many of the immigrants from both Italy and Ireland. The Third River, now the location of Memorial Park, served several mills that were constructed. Some of the prominent mill operators, from which many of the roads are named, included:

  • John Speer
  • Thomas Speer
  • Joseph Kingsland
  • Henry Duncan

In 1929, the area became the primary U. S. headquarters for Hoffmann-La Roche. The company is noted for its creation of both Valium and Librium. It provides employment to as many as 10,000 people. 

Parks and Recreation

The area is home to many great parks and open green spaces. With the Third River running through the center, it is no wonder that many are located nearby, such as:

Per the 2010 census, the area's population was 28,370 and consisted of 11,314 households and 7,660 families. This was an increase of 3.7% from the 2000 census. The racial breakdown of the residents was the following:

  • 82.50% white
  • 2.21% African American
  • 11.82% Hispanic or Latino
  • 9.95% Asian
  • 0.13% Native American
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 2.97% other races
  • 2.22% two or more races

The annual household income was $76,167. The occupational breakdown of the residents is the following:

  • 14.43% executive, professional, and management occupations
  • 13.66% office, technical, and administrative support
  • 8.63% service and sales jobs
