Taylortown is an unincorporated community within Montville Township. It is located in Morris County, New Jersey. Masar Park helps form the southern region of the neighborhood, while Pyramid Mountain Park lies with the northern edge. The main roadways in the community are Taylortown Road, Rockaway Valley Road, and Boonton Avenue.


The Lenni-Lenape Native American Indians dwelled in the area prior to Dutch farmers settling in the early 1800s. The Native Americans came in from the Mississippi River and lived by the rivers and streams. They fished and hunted in the area, as it was full of rabbits and foxes. The Dutch came from New Amsterdam, an area that is now part of New York.

The melting of a glacier is said to have created the natural area during the Wisconsin Glacial Episode. An ice sheet covered the area approximately 25,000 years ago, and when it melted, it radically altered an extensive portion of North America. 

The Pyramid Mountains offer over 1,675 acres of geological and ecological experiences. These include:

  • rugged trails
  • fields, forests
  • rock outcroppings
  • wetlands

In addition to these are the spectacular glacial erratics include both Tripod and Bear Rocks. Tripod Rock is a 180-ton rock that balances on the smaller ones. Bear Rock is known as the state's largest glacial erratic. The area is home to many educational displays and photographs. 


The area's per capita income was $60,198 in 2018.  As many as 62.16% of the adult residents have at least a four-year college degree. The breakdown of occupations for the employed townspeople is the following: 

  • 19.57% management and executive roles 
  • 13.80% sales and service occupations
  • 11.27% office, technical, and administrative support positions

The population of the larger township that the area is located in was 21,528 in 2010. This was an increase of 689 from 2000. The area is moderately diverse. In addition to English, the people speak Chinese and Spanish. A percentage of the residents identify with the following ancestries:
