West Haddonfield

West Haddonfield is located in the borough Haddonfield of Camden County, New Jersey. Kings Highway East creates the eastern border, with Cherry Hill to the north and Audubon to the south. The main roadways in the neighborhood include Avondale, Woodland, and West End Avenues.

History

The Lenape Native American tribe originally inhabited the area. However, after the European settlers arrived, they quickly moved to other areas. Francis Collins, a bricklaying English Quaker, was the first to settle in the area that is now Haddonfield and West Haddonfield. His estate, Mountwell, was built in a 400-acre area.

In 1701, Elizabeth Haddon left Southwark, England, for the New World in search of religious freedom. Her father, John Haddon, had purchased 500 acres that she proceeded to develop. The town would be named after him even though he never made it over to the New World. Elizabeth married shortly after arriving in the area to a Quaker minister, John Estaugh.

The area still has a heavy Quaker influence with the following still practicing establishments located on Friends Avenue:

  • 1786 - Haddonfield Friends School - serving early childhood to middle school
  • 1721 - Haddonfield Friends Meeting Place - built on land donated by John Haddon, meetings still commence with upwards of 200 members

In addition to the Quaker faith, the area also has the following places of worship:

  • Rhoads Temple United Methodist Church
  • Grace Church in Haddonfield
  • Christ the King Catholic Church
